Sekgopo Film

Screening

The film screenings held on 18 and 20 May 2021 at Sekgopo Drop-In Centre brought powerful South African stories to life through the presentation of Kalushi and Losing Lerato. These screenings formed part of a community outreach effort to use cinema as a tool for reflection, education, and engagement.

On 18 May, Kalushi—the moving story of Solomon Mahlangu, a young liberation hero—offered the audience a historical and emotional journey through South Africa’s fight for freedom. The film sparked important conversations about courage, resistance, and the cost of justice.

On 20 May, Losing Lerato captivated viewers with its emotional narrative centered around a father’s desperate attempt to be part of his daughter’s life. The film’s exploration of love, law, and fatherhood resonated deeply with the audience, prompting heartfelt discussions.

Both sessions drew community members of all ages and provided an inclusive platform to experience locally produced stories that reflect South Africa’s social realities and aspirations. The screenings highlighted the transformative power of film to inspire dialogue, heal wounds, and bring people together through shared experiences.
